Waibury Farm Investments Applaud Irrigation Schemes Initiative

Friday, 8 February 2013 at 12:33pm

The recent announcement also shows the Government is taking a comprehensive and strategic approach to resource use and its investment in water storage and irrigation.  This type of decision making will give New Zealand a competitive advantage over other resource-constrained countries, and takes advantage of an ample resource that has traditionally not been managed well.

Previously it has been farmers that have carried the burden of water infrastructure costs, so this recent decision by Central government to invest in irrigation infrastructure will hopefully  take the pressure off small communities.  As well as economic improvements, regional irrigation schemes should also increase the resilience of our rural communities both now and for generations to come – a key factor in ensuring the longevity of farming in this country.

Over the last four years the Government has been working closely with the primary sector and rural communities and we hope they will continue to do so. Major investments in better irrigation infrastructure, cleaner water and a focus on building productivity will create a more sustainable future for New Zealand farmers and dairy farming in particular.
