Government Budget Comment

Wednesday, 3 July 2013 at 12:44pm

The expenditure framework for Agriculture in this year’s budget had a few benefits for farmers. The biggest benefit is the future irrigation schemes or upgrading of existing schemes that will hopefully result in better/more productivity in the future.

Other benefits include an increase of $100 million per year to grow exports and an extra $200 million to be spent on research, science and technology over the next four years.

The budget also noted the forecast reduction in activity in the agriculture sector as a result of the 2012/13 drought, but also noted that this should be offset by strong commodity prices.

Overall, there were no surprises in the budget and farmers should be happy with the government’s attempt to reduce spending.
