Here in the South Island we've seen what experts have called 'once in 500 year flooding': a devastating weather phenomenon not seen in New Zealand for a long long time. In some parts of inland Canterbury half a metre of rain fell in just three days. Bridges and roads were damaged and closed, cutting off communities and even separating farmers from some of their stock and land.
